While at the University of Kansas, Matthew was largely involved with Triangle Fraternity, Engineers without Borders (EWB), and Engineering Ambassadors. While a member and project leader in EWB, Matt traveled to Bolivia three times spending a total of about a month in the country working on the chapter’s international sanitation project. In his time at KU he never saw a loss in Allen Fieldhouse (he was in Bolivia during the only loss KU had in his 4 years) and went to many sporting events.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys hanging out with friends and family. He especially enjoys spending time with his girlfriend of over 3 years. During the summer months he enjoys boating and water skiing at the lake with friends, and in the winter he follows college basketball.
Matthew is currently planning to attend graduate school in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering at either Stanford University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, or Texas A&M. He would like his research to focus on the field of dynamics and controls with applications to energy systems. At this time it is not clear whether a PhD is in his future.

Nick Hoffman
B.S. Chemical Engineering, Class of 2012
From Wichita, KS Consultant Trinity Consultants Lives in Seattle, WA Most of my involvement at KU was centered around the Biomedical Engineering Society. I was active in this organization planning events and meetings as both the secretary and president. This was a great way to bring engineers of multiple disciplines together who are excited about the same topics. I also served on the Funding Advisory Committee for three years in addition to regularly attending ESC meetings and activities. In the Self program, I was the community service coordinator and ran the community service competition. In addition to my involvement at KU, I was privileged to have a great internship in the summer of 2011 doing process engineering in West Texas. This allowed me to apply my classroom knowledge and pick up very useful practical skills along the way. I worked with Dr. Camarda my freshman and sophomore years doing research in Molecular Simulation and Design. It was a good way to put all my computer and programming skills to use in a chemical engineering application. I worked on the programming side of a project to predict the properties of Ionic Liquids based on their molecular structure. When the weather was nice in Lawrence, I liked to play Frisbee golf. I also liked to go out frequently with my friends to play trivia at 23rd St. Brewery, despite frequently placing in the lower percentiles. |
Samantha ForbesArchitectural Engineering

She served as President of the KU Student Chapter of AIAA her junior year, and its Vice-President her senior year. The spring semester of her sophomore year was spent studying abroad in Montpellier, France, and it was an experience she will never forget. After graduation, she worked as a Flight Test engineering intern at Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita. An avid basketball fan, Sarah Elizabeth never missed a home game (except while abroad, when she woke up at 3 am to watch them online) and thinks Allen Fieldhouse is one of the best places on Earth. She is also an avid reader and runner. She completed her first marathon in April 2012 and also used it as a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project, to whom she donated over $3,000. Sarah Elizabeth is currently a graduate student at the University of Texas in Austin. She is in the Orbital Mechanics research area, and is working at the Center for Space Research. A Jayhawk at heart, she can’t quite bring herself to say “Hook ‘Em Horns”, but she enjoys being at a school with almost as much spirit as Kansas. |
